A tag is a short description of a transaction, which lets you categorize your expenses in a flexible manner.
There are no fixed set of tags, you can just create any tag you want. You can attach multiple tags to the same transaction.
Example: If you went out for coffee with your friends John and Mary and you paid by your credit card, you can tag the transaction with "coffee" as well as "credit card".
FAQs
How can I easily tag transactions with similar descriptions?
You can use Rules to automatically applied a tag to any transaction that matches a set of filters (like keywords in the description).
Let's say you want all purchases you make at a store named "Safeway" to be tagged as grocery. You can accomplish this by creating a tagging rule with the tag grocery and keyword safeway. Any future transactions which contain the word safeway in their description will be automatically tagged as grocery.
To create a rule, click Add > Rule.
How does automatic tagging work, and how is it different from Rules?
Automatic tagging assigns a tag to your transactions based on machine-learning algorithms without needing any input from your side. It's a premium feature available only for synced accounts with a PLUS or higher membership plan.
Rules can also be used to add tags to synced/uploaded transactions automatically, but they differ in some key respects:
  • Rules need to be setup manually. By default, there are no rules applied to your transactions.
  • Rules are significantly more powerful, and let you define the exact critieria that should trigger the rule, and provide more actions than just adding tags.
Rules will take precedence over any automatic tags, i.e., if you have any rule that applies to a transaction, it will not be assigned any automatic tags.
My transactions are being tagged automatically with generic tags that I didn't create. How can I prevent this behavior ?
The generic tags are part of our automatic tagging feature. To disable automatic tagging, please visit Settings > Sync, then unselect "Enable automatic tagging" and save your settings.
How can I update or delete a tagging rule?
To edit or update a tagging rule, please follow these steps:
  1. Find a transaction to which it has been applied.
  2. Click on the rules icon next to the transaction.
  3. A dialog will popup that will let you edit or delete the rule.
How can I organize tags to be sub-tags of other tags?
To create a sub-tag, type it's name in this format:
name-of-parent-tag / name-of-sub-tag
Example: Food / Lunch will create Lunch as a sub-tag of Food.
To assign existing tags as sub-tags of another tag, follow these steps:
  • Click on "Tags" in the sidebar, then click "Edit".
  • Select the tags you wish to change to sub-tags.
  • Click "Move", and follow the instructions.
Organizing tags as sub-tags lets you easily navigate through them when looking at your Insights and Budgets. You can start by looking at broad top-level tags, and then drill down into narrower sub-tags.
Can I split a single transaction across multiple tags?
Yes, you can split a transaction across one or more tags. This is typically useful when you make a large purchase that combines several different category of products. For example, a $50 purchase in a grocery store might include $25 worth of Grocery and $25 worth of Food.
To split a transaction across multiple tags, please follow these steps:
  • Locate the transaction in the list of transactions.
  • Click on the transaction to expand it. Avoid clicking on the date, description, account or tags. You can also click on the arrow at the right end of the transaction.
  • Click "Split" and follow the instructions.
How can I easily find transactions that do not have any tags?
To find untagged transactions, please follow these steps:
  • Visit your Dashboard.
  • Locate the search bar just above the list of transactions. Then click the dropdown arrow next to it.
  • Click the "All Tags" dropdown, and select "No Tags".
  • You can also add other filters for accounts or a time period, if needed.
How can I rename a tag?
To rename a tag, please follow these steps:
  1. Click on "Tags" in the left sidebar. Then, find the relevant tag in the list and click on it. Alternatively, search for the tag using the search bar at the top.
  2. Click "Edit" near the top-right of the page.
  3. Enter the new name, and submit the form.
